The Pony Swim
In 1947 Marguerite Henry wrote Misty of Chincoteague, based on a true story about the annual pony swim in Virginia -- mares, stallions, and foals moving from one island to another for the purpose of auctioning the foals and therefore keeping the herds' numbers in check to preserve the pony breed. This is a great book for summer beach reading, especially knowing that the event still occurs, next on July 28.
