June 2010 Newsletter, Volume 4, No 6
Guests have already jumped into the season with both feet, figuratively speaking. Some even jumped into the pool with both feet, literally. Our extra warm weather has brought out the "silly" and the "fun" in most guests, and for others it brings out the need for a poolside nap on a lazy afternoon. Which kind of vacationer are YOU - a pool or beach splasher or a napper?
Just because the sunscreen factor has moved up a few notches and the need for keeping hydrated is more important than ever, golfing groups still frequent the Strand, too. SeaSide's wonderful breakfast prepares them for the rigors that they face ahead in the day - watching the course's bag attendants unload their golf gear to the carts, choosing between driver and long iron for the first hole's drive, teeing up the golf ball under the spell of a cool breeze at the tee boxes. Yes, life is a challenge out here in golf country, especially if you want to get an extra 9 or even 18 holes in after your first game of the day.
Back here at beach-central, SeaSide, the ring of children's voices fills the air with delight as they challenge each other to tube races in the lazy river or play in the surf. Later in the afternoon and on into the evening, those not out and about exploring the area's attractions can be found on the rides in the nearby O. D. Pavilion Amusement Park. Just how long can the intensity of this fun and frolic last? Well, let's just say candidly that some families plan to stay on for the Fourth of July festivities and fireworks!
If you have not made your summer 2010 get-away plans, good things can still happen by postponing your decision for a stay at the end of the summer, too. During the last several weeks in August, you might find some really great and amazing deals, plus the end-of-summer clearances will be in full swing, too, so give us a call or go online to check availability and pricing. You do deserve a fabulous summer vacation, and we can provide it for you!

SeaSide on Facebook
Facebook, the social media networking tool, has meant a huge cultural change to the old way of snapping photos and sending them around to relatives in the mail, one by one.
We at SeaSide count on Facebook to keep our guests up to date with what is going on around here, so if you have not explored our entries, we invite you to check that out. In fact, if you are looking for some information, such as whether the O. D. Pavilion has its amusement park up and running, that is a good place to post the question. (Answer: Yes, the Pavilion was up by Memorial Day).
Watch for unadvertised rate discounts there, too. Summer time and Facebook have lots to offer here at North Myrtle Beach!
Featured Recipe - Peach Custard Pie
The hardest part about this recipe is probably going to be peeling the peaches, so to solve that, start with well-ripened peaches and a pot of boiling water. As you might do with potatoes, put the peaches in the boiling water for just a few minutes. Then take them out and put them in a pot of cold or iced water. When they have cooled enough to handle, gently rub the peels so that they fall off.
Ingredients:
- 1 (9 inch) pie shell
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 3 tablespoons brown sugar
- 5 large fresh peaches - peeled, pitted and halved
- 1 1/2 cups evaporated milk
- 1 egg, beaten
- 2/3 cup white sugar
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
- In a small bowl, mix together 3 tablespoons flour and brown sugar. Sprinkle mixture into bottom of pastry-lined pie pan. Arrange peach halves, cut side up, on top of mixture.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together evaporated milk and egg. Pour mixture over peaches.
- In a medium bowl, mix together white sugar, 2 tablespoons flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Sprinkle mixture over top of peaches.
- Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes, until a knife inserted 1 inch from edge comes out clean. Allow to cool somewhat before slicing.
- Serve while still warm with optional scoop of ice cream, whipped cream, or poured heavy cream. Alternatively, chill the pie and serve cool, either with the above accents or as is.

- HEART CLEANERS - Housekeeping
- THE TRANSPLANTS - Maintenance
Our overall goal is to raise $3,000 by the October deadline for the walk, so participants are busy organizing their teams and accepting donations on their behalf for the walk. Watch for more about this event in future newsletters.

The accommodations are wonderful, the staff incredible (Flo in the breakfast room - what a treat), and the views amazing!
Guest review on Expedia.com by unnamed traveler from Philadelphia, PA, 04.14.2020
The rooms were great. I reserved a two bedroom. My friend and I both had our own rooms. The rooms were really clean and the hotel was quiet during the day and at night. It was a really relaxing stay and I would definitely continue to stay at the Seaside Resort when visiting North Myrtle Beach.

Seaside has much prettier views in my opinion [than other comparable places.]

What I like most: the view of the beach, location, space, and updated bathrooms.
Local Events Calendar
Everyone seems to sum up Myrtle Beach in the summer as "so many things to see and do," but have you ever wondered just what those things ARE, exactly?
Click here to see just some of the events and activities for our Grand Strand area. Our web site's calendar of events keeps an up-to-date list of many, but not all events. The list is too long, but you can gather the information that you need through our website, the Chamber websites, local tourism websites, and also through websites of specialized groups of your particular interest, such as sports, shopping centers, and galleries (the South Carolina Children's Museum has a summer list).
When you arrive, be sure to check the local newspaper, online local websites, local radio stations, and other sources for those unadvertised events, too. See what we mean! There are MANY things to do here!
Fun Facts
Looking for a snorkel mask so that you can explore underwater here at the beach? The ones with transparent casing, such as this one, reflect so much light that you feel as if someone is shining a flashlight in your face. Instead, get one with soft black rubber casing and two lenses, not the one long one shown here. The black rubber ones are simple, inexpensive, and better fitting.
How to de-fog a snorkel mask? First, safety glass lens is better than plastic. Then, before going out in the water, clean the inside of the lens with a tiny bit of toothpaste. Polish to remove streaks.
Where to snorkel here in the Grande Strand? Ask professionals. Sure, you can snorkel where you can swim, but professionals have insider's knowledge, local areas with even more interesting underwater areas for you!
Did you know that coral polyps are one of the world's smallest animals, and it is their exoskeleton that makes them well-known. When the coral polyps die, they leave their hard skeleton behind, and over time with the build-up of things on them and attached to them, these coral skeletons turn into reefs.
Corals are actually transparent. If it were not for the algae on them, called zooxanthellae that gives them their color, they would be plain.
Some of the Earth's reefs are so large that they are visible from our satellites in outer space.
Back on land, what is the difference between a wharf, a pier, and a dock? Fundamentally, the difference lies in how each is built. A wharf is built on the shore or projecting into a harbor. A pier is built on posts extending out from land. A dock is a landing pier, a space or waterway between two piers.
Do you need a license to fish in South Carolina? You should not need a license to fish from a pier if it is a pay-to-fish pier. For fishing in freshwater, yes, you need a license.
There are 12 major lakes in South Carolina, ranging in size from 7,500 to 110,000 acres. The major ones are J Strom Thurmond Lake (also known as Clarks Hill Lake), Lake Greenwood, Lake Hartwell, Lake Jocassee, Lake Keowee, Lake Marion/Santee Cooper Lake, Lake Monticello, Lake Moultrie/Santee Cooper Lake, Lake Murray, Lake Russell, Lake Wateree and Lake Wylie.
The largest lake in South Carolina is Lake Marion/Santee Cooper Lake, measuring 110,000 acres.
